Dr. Katie dispels some of the myths about pet food diets. This is the first part of a three part series.
Does dry kibble really help to clean the teeth or improve dental health?
Nope! This is a common misbelief, and even veterinarians were incorrectly taught this for many years. It was thought that dry foods help to crack the tartar off the teeth and keep them cleaner. However, we know much more about dentistry than we used to! In fact, studies have shown that pets eating dry kibble diets compared to pets eating canned food diets have NO better health status of their gums. This is because chewing dry kibble foods (and they are often not even chewed!) does nothing to help plaque or tartar at or below the gumline, which is where it really matters, affecting the health of the gums and the mouth. In fact, many holistic veterinarians and pet parents have seen raw food diets (or fresh, low-processed food options) actually promote better oral health. Raw foods are thought to have active enzymes that help serve as anti-bacterial and anti-plaque agents.
Additionally, raw meaty bones are known to be one of the best options to allow dogs to effectively chew their way to better oral health. Other great ways to support oral health include daily teeth brushing and / or offering safe chewing items that will rub on the gums during active chewing. Beware of hard items that can break your pet’s teeth - such as antlers, hooves, bully sticks and Nylon bones. Broken teeth are painful and can lead to dental infection and tooth root abscess.
Is dry food better for keeping pet’s stools firm?
This myth gets supported by the experience of many pet owners whose pets are consistently eating dry food, (especially the same exact type of food), for long periods of time, and then experience diarrhea when any new soft foods or “people foods” are introduced. This type of scenario would be expected with anyone who eats the same diet with essentially zero variety over a long period of time, and then ingests something new. In fact, the absence of variety in the diet will promote these problems, and also promote allergies or intolerances to certain foods as the gut’s ability to digest different things is altered after years of no exposure to variety.

Thank you Jacqueline for taking the time to send in Murphy's testimony.
Murphy's story is exactly why we do what we do!
All dog owners know the painful angst felt when their dog, suffering from health issues, has that pleading ‘help me’ look in their eyes. Murphy’s once white legs had turned a deep maroon color… bald spots were visible where clumps of hair had fallen out… bloody sores from excessive biting and scratching dotted his body… eyes were runny and bloodshot. In short, the little guy was miserable and I was desperate to find the cause of his misery. Fortunately, the astute owner of my local pet store suggested that I reach out to Glacier Peak Holistics. This is when Murphy’s health began its journey to well-being.
Glacier Peak Holistics Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan shined a light on all his allergies. He was immediately put on a strict allergy-free diet and a host of Glacier Peak nourishing immune-building supplements. A helpful daily log was provided to aid me in carrying out the 60-day protocol consistently. In addition, topicals provided comfort and healing. Glacier Peak Mountain Salve (I call it Miracle Salve) began healing his sores within days. The internal healing of his yeast problem would take longer but it was comforting to know that is was being addressed in a manner that would cure the problem, not just mask it.
Anxiously watching for day-by-day signs of improvement proved frustrating so I forced myself to assess his progress in two-week blocks. By end of the third two-week block I wanted to celebrate when neighbors and even the UPS man began commenting on his visible improvement. After 60 days his improvement, though undeniable, was not 100% so it was decided to extend the protocol and assess it after an additional 30 days. I have no doubt that the 100% marker will be reached in due time.
Owned by Chris & Nicole Van Ruler, Outdoor K9 is a pet store based out of Steamboat Springs, CO, that specializes in outdoor products for your canine companion. The Van Rulers moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in the spring of 2012. In Steamboat they found a a community that was both family- and dog-friendly, with endless outdoor recreational opportunities. This inspired the family, in their latest adventure, to move to Steamboat Springs, a place they wanted to both raise their family (currently two dogs and a little girl) and share their love of dogs and adventure with the community they love. If your are in the Steamboat Springs area, make sure you stop by and say hello!
Why did you open an independent Pet Store?
We designed and opened our pet storebecause we were passionate about the need for taking care of our animal companions with good nutrition, supplements and giving them high quality outdoor gear to adventure with their owners while supporting our outdoor mountain lifestyles here in Steamboat Colorado.
Is it something you always wanted to do?
I wouldn't say this is exactly what I always wanted to do but I have always been a healer and had a background in Human Nutrition and lifestyle wellness and have always known I wanted to help others and their dogs. My husband and I startedOutdoor K9 because our animals have always been the motivation to get outdoors and adventure to support our outdoor, active healthy family lifestyle.
What do you feel is unique about your store?
We have certified pet nutritionists on staff and we offer the Glacier Peak Holistics Life Wellness Stress Scan that offers a great component to our pet wellness consultations. It also helps us to improve the diet and lifestyle of our animal companion customers. We are able to offer product selection advice because our family here at Outdoor K9 tries and tests all our health products and outdoor gear with their own dogs.
What seems to be the main concerns of the pet parents that walk into your store?
When a customer walks in our store.there main questions revolve around their pets nutrition. They ask us what is the best nutrition protocol for their dog based on their budget.
Do you have a success story to share about how the GPH Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan and/or products that have helped a dog or cat get back into balance?
Yes, we have countless stores for you. We have several dog's that we have helped change their daily diet to clean up digestive issues that were chronic in the past. We have many dogs that have had improved joint mobility and are pain free because ofInflapotion and HerbAprin being used in conduction with one another. Our dog Aspen, is able to run with me on a weekly basis because of Inflapotion in her daily diet. Aspen has had shorten duration in wound healing because of Glacier's Mountain Salve and Colloidal Silver and she has had increased immune system function while using Peak Immune when we are transitioning between seasons here in the Mountains of Colorado. We are completely grateful and thankful for all the help Glacier Peak Holistics has given our Van Ruler and Outdoor K9 animal families.
Do you have a Holistic Vet that you refer people to if needed?
Yes, Mountain Peaks Veterinary Clinic just moved right across the street fromOutdoor K9 in Wild Horse Marketplace in Steamboat Springs, CO.
Do you work with any local animal charities?
Yes, we work with our local Routt County Humane Society. We sell local coffee to support the local Humane Society, have a donation box at our counter and support local events that support the Humane societies current needs.
What are your plans for the future?
At Outdoor K9 we plan to relaunch our website and sell some of our niche products online. We also plan on being more involved in our community charities to support local causes that our store believe in.
