Long before kelp became a familiar ingredient in pet supplements, coastal communities were gathering sea vegetables for food, agriculture, and animal nutrition.
Growing in the cold waters of the North Atlantic, Thorvin® Kelp comes from Ascophyllum nodosum, a species of brown seaweed naturally rich in iodine, trace minerals, complex carbohydrates, pigments, and other phytonutrients.¹ ²
At Glacier Peak Holistics®, we chose Thorvin® Kelp for both Daily Defense™ and Super Cleanse™, but it plays a slightly different role in each formula.
In Daily Defense™, it contributes naturally occurring iodine and trace minerals to a diverse everyday nutritional blend. In Super Cleanse™, it provides mineral-rich nutritional support alongside Clinoptilolite as part of a focused wellness routine.

From the North Atlantic to the Food Bowl
Seaweed has been part of human and animal nutrition for generations.
Coastal cultures around the world have traditionally harvested marine plants for food, while seaweed meals have also been incorporated into livestock and animal feeding practices because of their naturally concentrated mineral content.
Unlike plants growing in soil, kelp grows surrounded by mineral-rich seawater. Brown seaweeds such as Ascophyllum nodosum naturally accumulate a diverse range of minerals and trace elements from that environment.²
Research reviewing seaweed use in animal nutrition has identified Ascophyllum nodosum as a natural source of minerals including iodine, selenium, manganese, copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium.²
That naturally broad nutritional profile is one of the reasons we chose Thorvin® Kelp for our formulas.
What Makes Thorvin® Kelp So Interesting?
Kelp is sometimes discussed almost entirely as a source of iodine.
Iodine is certainly important, but it is only one part of the story.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains a complex combination of:
- Trace minerals
- Macro minerals
- Marine polysaccharides
- Dietary fiber
- Polyphenols
- Naturally occurring pigments
- Vitamins and other phytonutrients
A scientific review of seaweeds in animal nutrition reported that Ascophyllum nodosum provides numerous micro and macro-elements while also containing significant amounts of dietary fiber.²
Researchers are also interested in the unique polysaccharides found in brown seaweeds, including compounds such as alginate, fucoidan, and laminarin. These marine compounds have been investigated for their interactions with digestive, microbial, antioxidant, and immune-related processes.²
As with all nutrition research, the form, concentration, dose, and species being studied matter. Findings involving concentrated extracts should not automatically be applied to whole kelp or a finished pet supplement.
Why Iodine Matters
One of kelp's most recognizable nutritional characteristics is its naturally occurring iodine.
Iodine is an essential trace mineral involved in normal thyroid hormone production, which in turn plays an important role in normal metabolism. Because the body cannot make iodine, it must come from the diet.
That makes kelp an interesting whole food source of this important nutrient.
It also means more is not automatically better.
Kelp can contain meaningful amounts of iodine, and scientific studies involving Ascophyllum nodosum in dogs specifically acknowledge its iodine content. In a randomized canine study, researchers monitored thyroid hormone concentrations as part of the safety assessment because the seaweed naturally supplied iodine.³
This is why formulated serving amounts matter. When using products containing kelp, we always recommend following the product directions rather than adding additional kelp without considering the rest of the pet's diet.
More Than Minerals: Research Into Antioxidant Activity
Researchers have also become interested in seaweed because of its naturally occurring antioxidant compounds.
Brown seaweeds contain polyphenols and other bioactive constituents that have been investigated for their ability to interact with oxidative processes. A 2022 review examining seaweed compounds in animal health discussed antioxidant activity associated with seaweed-derived minerals, pigments, polyphenols, and polysaccharides.²
Minerals naturally present in Ascophyllum nodosum, including selenium, copper, iron, and zinc, also participate in normal biological processes associated with antioxidant defenses.²
We do not view Thorvin® Kelp as a standalone antioxidant supplement. Instead, these naturally occurring compounds add another layer to its broader nutritional profile.
What Does Research Say About Ascophyllum nodosum in Dogs?
One of the interesting things about Ascophyllum nodosum is that there is published research specifically involving dogs.
A double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 60 client-owned dogs evaluated treats containing Ascophyllum nodosum over 90 days. Researchers reported lower plaque and calculus accumulation and improvements in several oral health measures compared with placebo.³
A later metabolomic study examined powdered Ascophyllum nodosum supplementation in dogs and found measurable changes in the composition of canine saliva after 30 days. Researchers noted that the exact mechanisms behind these changes remain unclear and warrant additional research.⁵
A 2023 veterinary review evaluated the broader body of evidence surrounding Ascophyllum nodosum and oral health in dogs and cats. The authors concluded that multiple clinical studies have demonstrated preventive effects on plaque and calculus formation, while also emphasizing that the precise mechanism of action remains uncertain.⁴
These studies did not evaluate Daily Defense™ or Super Cleanse™, and oral health is not the reason we include Thorvin® Kelp in either formula. We mention them because they demonstrate something useful about the ingredient itself: Ascophyllum nodosum is not simply a source of minerals. It contains biologically interesting compounds that continue to be studied directly in companion animals.
Marine Polysaccharides & Digestive Research
Another area of interest involves the complex carbohydrates naturally found in brown seaweed.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains substantial amounts of dietary fiber along with marine polysaccharides such as alginates, laminarin, and fucoidan.²
Research into seaweeds and their components has explored how these compounds may interact with the gastrointestinal environment and microbial populations. Some have been investigated for potential prebiotic properties and their relationship with intestinal wellness.²
Research in this area continues to evolve, and many studies involve isolated or concentrated compounds rather than whole kelp.
For us, that is another reason to think of Thorvin® Kelp as a complex whole food ingredient, rather than reducing it to iodine alone.
Why We Include Thorvin® Kelp in Daily Defense™
Daily Defense™ is designed around everyday nutritional wellness.
We combine Thorvin® Kelp with Diatomaceous Earth, Garlic Bulb, Moringa Oleifera Leaf, Bee Pollen, Dandelion Root, Nettles Herb, Dulse Sea Vegetable, Barley Grass, and Alfalfa Herb to create a diverse nutritional blend for dogs, cats, and horses.
Thorvin® Kelp fits naturally into that formula because it contributes:
✓ Naturally occurring iodine
✓ Trace minerals
✓ Marine phytonutrients
✓ Nutritional diversity from a whole sea vegetable
✓ A complementary mineral profile alongside our herbs, greens, and other whole food ingredients
Daily Defense™ was designed to provide nutritional support as part of a pet's regular wellness routine. Rather than isolating one nutrient, we bring together ingredients with different nutritional profiles to help add variety to the bowl.
Thorvin® Kelp gives us something land-grown botanicals cannot: the distinctive mineral and phytonutrient profile of a North Atlantic sea vegetable.
Why We Include Thorvin® Kelp in Super Cleanse™
In Super Cleanse™, Thorvin® Kelp has a different partner and a different role within the formula.
Super Cleanse™ contains just two carefully selected ingredients:
Thorvin® Kelp
Pure Micronized Clinoptilolite
Clinoptilolite is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral studied for its porous structure, adsorption, and ion exchange properties.
Thorvin® Kelp complements it by supplying naturally occurring trace minerals and nutritional support.
Together, we use them as part of a focused formula designed to support digestive wellness, normal detoxification pathways, overall nutritional balance, and everyday vitality during a structured wellness routine.
The Thorvin® Kelp used in Super Cleanse™ is sourced from the cold North Atlantic Ocean, and our current Super Cleanse™ product information notes that each batch is tested for radioactive contamination.
Thorvin® Kelp & Clinoptilolite: Two Very Different Ingredients
One of the reasons Super Cleanse™ is so interesting is that the two ingredients are fundamentally different.
Clinoptilolite is a porous volcanic mineral. Its scientific interest largely centers around adsorption and ion exchange.
Thorvin® Kelp is a nutrient-rich marine ingredient. It contributes iodine, minerals, and naturally occurring compounds found in brown seaweed.
We did not choose two ingredients that do the same thing.
We chose two ingredients with different characteristics that complement one another within a focused wellness formula.
If you want to go deeper into the other half of the blend, our Behind the Blend: Clinoptilolite article explores the research behind its unique honeycomb-like structure and binding properties.
Daily Defense™ vs. Super Cleanse™: Why Is Thorvin® Kelp in Both?
Seeing Thorvin® Kelp on both ingredient lists does not mean Daily Defense™ and Super Cleanse™ serve the same purpose.
Daily Defense™ is our everyday nutritional wellness formula. Thorvin® Kelp contributes to a larger blend of herbs, greens, sea vegetables, and other naturally derived ingredients selected for ongoing nutritional support.⁶
Super Cleanse™ is a more focused formula combining Thorvin® Kelp with Clinoptilolite to support digestive wellness, normal detoxification pathways, and nutritional balance during a structured wellness routine.
The kelp stays the same.
The formula around it changes the bigger picture.
That is one of the principles behind how we formulate.
Is Thorvin® Kelp Different From Regular Kelp?
"Kelp" is a broad term covering numerous species of large brown seaweeds.
Thorvin® Kelp is specifically derived from Ascophyllum nodosum, a brown seaweed associated with North Atlantic coastal waters.¹
That distinction matters because different seaweed species can have very different nutritional and phytochemical profiles.
Where the seaweed grows, when it is harvested, and how it is processed can also influence its final composition.
For us, knowing the species and source is part of knowing what we are putting into the blend.
Why We Chose Thorvin® Kelp
We chose Thorvin® Kelp because it gives our formulas something truly distinctive.
It is not simply "a green powder."
It is a whole marine ingredient naturally containing iodine, trace minerals, fiber, polysaccharides, and other compounds that scientists continue to study in both animal nutrition and companion animal research.² ³ ⁴
In Daily Defense™, we use that nutritional complexity to complement our everyday blend of herbs, greens, and sea vegetables.
In Super Cleanse™, we pair it with Clinoptilolite to provide trace mineral nutrition alongside a very different naturally occurring mineral.
One ingredient.
Two thoughtful formulas.
And a nutritional story that begins beneath the cold waters of the North Atlantic.
